Chicago, Illinois – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across northern Illinois by late Monday night, with areas from the Quad Cities to Rockford under a heightened risk for severe weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a cold front will bring a surge of moisture and instability Monday night into Tuesday. Storms could begin as early as 9 p.m. in western Illinois, with the greatest threat for severe weather—including damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes—concentrated in Level 3 areas like Rockford, Dubuque, and Madison.

Level 2 risks extend east toward Chicago, Ottawa, and Bloomington, while a broader Level 1 risk covers central and eastern counties. Storm strength remains uncertain, especially regarding Tuesday morning redevelopment, but overnight impacts are expected.

Travelers along I-80, I-88, and I-39 should monitor updates closely and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. Power outages and tree damage are possible where storms intensify. Residents should charge phones, secure loose items, and review their emergency plans by Monday evening.

Conditions remain calm through the weekend, with highs rising into the low 80s Monday. Another update is expected Sunday evening. Watches or warnings may be issued by late Monday.
