Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois residents should prepare for dense fog and steady rain through Sunday as unseasonably warm weather continues. The National Weather Service warns that patchy fog tonight could become dense, especially near and north of I-80, with visibility reduced for drivers along major roadways like I-55.
According to the National Weather Service, light rain will begin Saturday evening and intensify Sunday morning, creating slick road conditions. Rain is likely throughout the day Sunday, with mild temperatures peaking in the mid-40s before cooler air moves in Monday. Winds could reach 15 mph, and localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas.
Monday brings partly sunny skies with highs near 44, but another weather system Tuesday may bring a mix of rain and snow, particularly after dark. Overnight temperatures Tuesday will drop to the upper 20s, setting the stage for colder conditions heading into New Year’s Day.
Drivers are urged to use caution tonight and Sunday due to fog and wet roads. Pedestrians should also exercise care, as slippery conditions could develop in spots.
Looking ahead, cooler temperatures and more precipitation are expected later in the week. New Year’s Day will see highs near freezing, with mostly cloudy skies. Additional rain and snow chances may impact travel across Illinois into midweek.
