CLAYTON, CA – A minor earthquake rumbled across the East Bay early Sunday, delivering a brief shake felt by some residents near the base of Mount Diablo. The magnitude 2.8 tremor struck at 12:42 a.m. local time and was centered just four miles southeast of Clayton.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake originated at a shallow depth of approximately 2.6 miles. The epicenter’s proximity to populated areas meant light shaking was reported in Clayton, Concord, and parts of Walnut Creek. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.
While small earthquakes are a frequent occurrence in the seismically active Bay Area, the event serves as a critical reminder for preparedness. Local officials encourage residents to maintain an earthquake emergency kit with water, food, and other essential supplies.
Seismologists with the California Integrated Seismic Network continue to monitor the region for activity. Although significant aftershocks are not anticipated from an earthquake of this size, residents are advised to remain aware of their surroundings. No alerts or advisories are in effect.
