Eureka, CA — Spring arrives with dangerous surf and a wet midweek in Northern California, as sneaker waves and rainfall raise safety concerns across Humboldt County. Beachgoers, drivers along U.S. Route 101, and coastal communities should brace for hazards through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service Eureka Office, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 2 p.m. Wednesday for Coastal Del Norte, Northern and Southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino County. The greatest threat comes from sneaker waves—large, unexpected surges that can sweep people off rocks and beaches without warning.

These waves can lift heavy logs and debris, posing serious risks to anyone near the water. Officials strongly advise avoiding steep beaches, rocky outcrops, and jetty areas. Stay far back from the shore and never turn your back on the ocean.

Rain returns late Wednesday with an 80% chance of precipitation, becoming widespread overnight with gusts up to 23 mph. Thursday remains rainy and breezy, with wind gusts nearing 22 mph and a high near 53°F. Friday looks cooler with continued rain and a high around 52°F.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday clears slightly with partial sun and highs in the mid-50s. Rain returns Sunday and Monday, continuing the stormy spring trend. Highs will remain in the low-to-mid 50s with lows in the 40s.

Residents are urged to monitor road conditions, especially near coastal routes like U.S. 101, where surf and rain may affect travel. Emergency services stress preparedness and extra caution for those planning outdoor activities.
