Medford, Oregon – Thunderstorms and dangerous heat are expected to hit southern Oregon and northern California this weekend, with severe weather risks persisting through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, storm chances return Sunday across northern California, then shift east into the Cascades and Klamath Basin on Monday. The main hazards will be lightning, gusty outflow winds up to 45 mph, and small hail. Thunderstorm activity is most likely in the afternoon and evening hours.

Areas at greatest risk include Medford, Ashland, Klamath Falls, and Alturas. On Sunday, I-5 travelers near Yreka and Grants Pass may encounter fast-developing storms. By Monday, the threat expands toward Lakeview, Mount Shasta, and Highway 97. Residents are urged to seek shelter when thunder is heard and remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble.

Simultaneously, a heat risk advisory remains in place this weekend, with inland temperatures expected to hit 90–97°F. Hydrate regularly, wear lightweight clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Those without access to air conditioning face elevated risk.
