Charleston, WV – An extreme cold watch has been issued for northeast Kentucky starting late Sunday night. Residents should prepare for wind chills as low as 11 degrees below zero.
According to the National Weather Service, the watch covers Greenup, Carter, Boyd, and Lawrence counties in Kentucky, extending into portions of West Virginia. The coldest temperatures are expected Monday morning, with subzero wind chills persisting through Wednesday morning.
Officials warn that exposure to such low temperatures could cause frostbite or hypothermia. Unprotected skin can freeze within minutes. Residents are advised to dress in layers, including hats and gloves, and limit outdoor activities.
Precautions to prevent frozen water pipes include wrapping or draining them, or allowing faucets to drip. Ensure outdoor animals have warm, dry shelter and unfrozen water. Portable heaters and generators must be used correctly to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
