Manhattan, KS – A winter storm is set to impact northeast and north-central Kansas on Tuesday evening, bringing strong winds and snowfall that could create dangerous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Topeka, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued from Tuesday evening through late Tuesday night. Forecasts indicate that while snowfall totals may remain around one inch, wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, leading to whiteout conditions and hazardous roadways.
The affected area includes Republic, Washington, Marshall, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Pottawatomie, and Jackson counties. Cities such as Manhattan, Concordia, Seneca, and Hiawatha are expected to experience the worst conditions during the storm’s peak.
Travel may become treacherous, and the NWS advises residents to reconsider any non-essential travel. Those who must travel should carry a winter storm kit, including blankets, extra clothing, tire chains, a flashlight, booster cables, and other emergency supplies.
Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and prepare for potential power outages due to strong winds. The storm is expected to clear by Wednesday morning, but lingering icy road conditions may persist into the early hours.
