Atlanta, GA – Fire danger levels are elevated across northeast Georgia today due to dry conditions, gusty winds, and low humidity. A special weather statement from the National Weather Service (NWS) warns of potentially hazardous conditions, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

According to the NWS Peachtree City office, relative humidity levels will fall below 30% north of Interstate 20 and below 25% to the south. Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 35 mph north of the interstate and around 25 mph further south. These conditions are forecast to last for about four hours this afternoon, significantly increasing fire risk.

The NWS Greenville-Spartanburg office echoed similar warnings for northeast counties, including Rabun, Habersham, and Hart. Officials urge residents to check local burn permitting requirements before burning outdoors. Dry vegetation in the region can cause fires to spread rapidly.

Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution if engaging in outdoor activities involving open flames. Even small sparks can quickly grow out of control under today’s conditions. Authorities also recommend keeping firefighting tools, such as water and shovels, nearby when conducting any outdoor burns.

These conditions are expected to diminish later in the evening as winds ease and humidity begins to rise. However, the fire danger will remain elevated until vegetation receives significant moisture.
