Amarillo, Texas – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this evening, bringing threats of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall from late Sunday into early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms may begin as early as 5 p.m., with the most active period between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. Areas most at risk include Amarillo, Dumas, Perryton, Pampa, and Guymon, Oklahoma. The strongest storms could produce wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter.
Storm development may come in multiple waves, increasing the risk of prolonged hazardous conditions, especially across the northern and eastern Panhandle. Region 1 (including Amarillo and Dumas) may see activity first, followed by Region 2 (Canadian, Borger, and Pampa) around 10 p.m., and Region 3 (Beaver and Perryton) into the early morning hours.
Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours, and ensure phones are charged. Emergency alerts and weather radios are strongly recommended due to the overnight timing.
