Snow is falling across northern Minnesota this Friday morning, but the weather brings a mix of relief and challenges. While light accumulations may blanket parts of the North Shore, the region continues to grapple with abnormally dry to severe drought conditions. A quick check of the latest Drought Monitor shows improvement in Arrowhead and eastern Iron Range areas, but many inland regions remain critically dry.

The snowfall, though modest, could create slick roads, especially along Highway 61. Shoreline communities should also prepare for strong northwest winds gusting up to 40 mph, which could lead to reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions from Silver Bay to Grand Marais. These winds are expected to peak between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., with conditions gradually improving later in the day.

As the weekend approaches, temperatures will remain bitterly cold. Saturday’s high of 20°F, coupled with blustery winds, will make outdoor activities challenging. Sunday offers a brief warm-up to 27°F, but another round of light snow is possible, keeping roads icy.

Stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions, especially if traveling along Highway 61. Secure outdoor items, dress in layers, and plan ahead for winter delays this weekend.
