Grand Forks, ND – A winter chill is setting in across northeastern North Dakota as residents prepare for a snowy weekend and subzero temperatures. Bitter cold is expected to linger through Monday, with low wind chills posing safety risks for travelers.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, snowfall totals ranged from 3 to 10 inches in the region, with Cavalier and Lakota reporting as much as 9 to 10 inches. Overnight temperatures will drop to -8°F in Grand Forks on Friday, with wind chills nearing -16°F.
Saturday will bring some relief as clouds roll in, increasing temperatures slightly to 17°F, but southeast winds gusting up to 23 mph may exacerbate icy conditions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, especially on major roads like I-29 and Highway 2, where snowpack and drifting are likely.
Sunday looks milder with highs around 23°F, but a light wintry mix is possible overnight. These conditions may extend into Monday morning commutes. Looking further ahead, Christmas Day could bring highs near 31°F with dry, sunny skies—a potential break from the bitter weather.
Residents should dress warmly, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and prepare vehicles for the cold. Keep an emergency kit, including blankets and food, in your car when traveling.
