Grand Forks, ND – Residents in North Dakota should prepare for a bitterly cold Thanksgiving as subzero wind chills and light snow make their way across the region. Temperatures will struggle to reach double digits on Thursday, with wind chills plummeting as low as -20°F, creating hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, light snow on Wednesday will transition into frigid conditions overnight, setting the stage for an arctic Thanksgiving. Highs on Thursday will reach only 14°F in Grand Forks, with northwest winds gusting up to 25 mph. Roads, including I-29, may experience icy patches due to continued lake-effect snow in eastern areas near the Lake of the Woods.

The cold intensifies Friday and Saturday, with highs ranging from 0°F to 15°F and wind chills as low as -25°F. Nights will be particularly brutal, with lows dipping to -5°F and gusts maintaining a bone-chilling effect. Despite mostly sunny skies heading into the weekend, the prolonged freeze increases the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed to the elements for more than a few minutes.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, dress in layers, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicles if traveling for the holiday. Those planning holiday festivities should also monitor forecasts closely as conditions may further deteriorate.

The weather may slightly improve Sunday with highs nearing 12°F, but the cold remains firmly in place through the start of next week. Stay tuned for updates on any developing snowfall.
