Bismarck, ND – May 8, 2025 – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of western and central North Dakota today, as critical fire weather conditions are expected. Gusty southwest winds, low humidity, and the possibility of dry thunderstorms create a heightened fire risk from noon until 9 p.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service, sustained winds will range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 15 percent, making fire starts and rapid spread more likely. Additionally, isolated dry thunderstorms may ignite fires late in the afternoon and evening, further complicating fire control efforts.
The warning impacts numerous counties, including Divide, Burke, Williams, McKenzie, and Morton, among others. Specifically, Sheridan County is also under a Red Flag Warning, with winds expected to reach up to 35 mph and humidity levels dropping to around 20 percent.
Local authorities urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and be cautious of potential fire starts from lightning strikes. If fires do develop, they may spread quickly due to the combination of wind and low moisture. Firefighting efforts could be made more difficult by erratic winds and lightning.
This warning is set to expire at 9 p.m. CDT, but conditions could change rapidly. Stay informed and take appropriate precautions.
