Bismarck, N.D. – Fire danger is critical across much of North Dakota today, with gusty winds and low humidity triggering Red Flag Warnings from noon to 9 p.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Bismarck and Grand Forks, the warning covers nearly all of western, central, and eastern North Dakota, including Divide, Burleigh, Grand Forks, and Pembina counties. Southerly winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph. Relative humidity could dip as low as 15 percent in central areas.
Cities from Williston and Minot to Fargo and Jamestown are at elevated risk. Any outdoor fire—including controlled burns or sparks from machinery—could ignite rapidly and become uncontrollable.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, delay the use of heavy equipment, and secure trailer chains to prevent dragging sparks. Fire departments across the state remain on high alert, and burn bans may be enforced by county officials.
This is the first widespread Red Flag Warning of the spring season for North Dakota, arriving ahead of a potentially active fire week. The warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. tonight, with updates possible if dry, windy conditions persist.
