Bismarck, N.D. – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of North Dakota Sunday afternoon through evening, with strong winds and dry air raising the risk of fast-moving wildfires from Bismarck to Grand Forks.
According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck and Grand Forks, Fire Weather Watches remain in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Sunday. Southerly winds will range from 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 40 mph in the west and central regions. Relative humidity is forecast to drop as low as 17 percent in some areas, particularly across counties including Burleigh, Stark, Morton, and Ward.
In eastern North Dakota, cities like Grand Forks, Pembina, and Barnes County could see winds of 15 to 25 mph with similarly dry conditions. Outdoor burning is discouraged, as any spark could ignite fires that spread rapidly and are difficult to contain.
Fire crews and emergency officials are urging residents to avoid any open flames, secure trailers and chains to prevent sparks, and delay any brush-clearing or machinery use until conditions improve.
Warnings may be upgraded to Red Flag Warnings by Sunday morning if weather trends continue. Residents are advised to stay alert and monitor local alerts throughout the day.
