Bismarck, ND – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of western and central North Dakota this afternoon and evening, as the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the region.
According to the NWS, relative humidity values are forecast to drop to as low as 12 percent, combined with strong south-southwesterly winds gusting up to 40 mph. These conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, with isolated dry thunderstorms potentially developing late this afternoon into the evening. The combination of dry conditions, high winds, and the possibility of lightning could create a serious fire risk across the region.
The Red Flag Warning impacts a large portion of the state, including counties such as Divide, Burke, Williams, Mountrail, Ward, McKenzie, Dunn, and Morton, lasting until 9 p.m. CDT. Any fire that ignites in these areas could spread quickly and become difficult to control due to the gusty winds and dry conditions.
Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to exercise caution when engaging in any activities that could spark a fire. Local authorities also caution that lightning from dry thunderstorms could ignite fires in areas that are already parched.
The warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. CDT tonight, and more updates or additional warnings may follow as conditions change.
