Fargo, N.D. – Strong winds and critically dry air will combine to create dangerous fire conditions across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota today, with a Red Flag Warning in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT. Wildfires may ignite easily and spread quickly, especially from Fargo northward through the Red River Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, relative humidity levels could dip to around 20 percent, while south winds will blow at 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The alert covers areas including Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Hallock, and Ada, where grasses and fields are already tinder-dry.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, including bonfires and debris piles. Even small sparks from farm equipment, grills, or discarded cigarettes could start fast-moving fires under these conditions. Fire crews may have difficulty containing any blazes that begin.
The warning comes amid spring’s return to the Northern Plains, when dormant vegetation and wind create elevated wildfire risks. Officials stress that burning bans may be enforced and ask the public to remain alert and cautious through the evening.
More updates are expected later today as fire risk conditions evolve.
