Grand Forks, ND – A Cold Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of northeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota, warning of dangerously low wind chill values starting overnight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind chills could drop as low as 40 degrees below zero, posing a significant risk of frostbite or hypothermia within minutes of exposure. The advisory begins at midnight Tuesday and remains in effect until noon Wednesday. Areas affected include Grand Forks, Bottineau, Kittson, and Roseau counties, among others.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including wearing multiple layers, hats, and gloves when outdoors. The NWS also advises keeping pets indoors and ensuring outdoor animals have proper shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Portable heaters should be used with caution, and carbon monoxide risks should be mitigated by avoiding the use of generators or grills inside.
Officials recommend checking on vulnerable individuals such as older neighbors and family members during this period. Travel should be approached with caution, and emergency kits are encouraged for those venturing out.
The advisory highlights that frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes in such extreme conditions.
