Raleigh, NC – A winter storm warning is in effect across central North Carolina, bringing snow, freezing rain, and hazardous road conditions. The National Weather Service reports snowfall beginning this afternoon, transitioning to freezing rain by tonight, impacting major highways, including I-40.

According to the National Weather Service Raleigh, snow accumulation up to two inches is expected before a mix of sleet and freezing rain creates a slick, icy layer. Dangerous travel conditions are forecast to persist into Saturday morning. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use caution on bridges and overpasses, which will ice over quickly.

Tonight, freezing rain will intensify, with temperatures dropping to 29°F. Power outages are possible as ice accumulates on power lines and tree branches. Winds may gust up to 30 mph by Saturday morning, increasing the risk of fallen trees and outages.

The storm will clear by Saturday afternoon, with sunny skies and a high of 43°F. However, lingering icy patches may cause issues for drivers throughout the weekend. Sunday is forecast to be sunny and calm, with temperatures reaching 41°F.

Travelers are advised to check local conditions and prepare emergency kits for their vehicles. For updates, listen to NOAA Weather Radio or visit weather.gov.
