Raleigh, NC – Residents across central North Carolina are under a Winter Storm Warning with freezing rain, sleet, and snow creating hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that precipitation will persist through early Saturday morning, causing slick roads and potential travel delays.
According to the NWS, freezing drizzle and light snow will move across the Triangle area overnight. Ice accumulation of up to 0.1 inches is expected, particularly in areas north and west of Raleigh. Hazardous driving conditions are likely on major routes, including Interstate 40 and US-64. Travel is discouraged unless absolutely necessary.
In the Triad region, snow and freezing drizzle are expected to redevelop after midnight and taper off by 3 AM. This may result in less than an inch of snow accumulation, with roads remaining slippery into the morning hours. Fayetteville will see freezing rain mixing with rain through 6 AM before temperatures rise slightly.
The weekend forecast calls for clearing skies by midday Saturday, with highs near 43°F in Raleigh and surrounding areas. Overnight lows will drop to 22°F. Sunday will be sunny but cold, with highs near 41°F. By Monday, clear skies and slightly warmer temperatures are expected, with highs in the upper 40s.
Officials urge residents to monitor weather updates and prepare for icy roadways. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on icy surfaces.
