Newport, NC – Eastern North Carolina will see mild temperatures and scattered showers today before a sharp cold front changes the forecast. Highs will reach the upper 60s to near 70 today, but cooler conditions are set to follow later in the week.
According to the National Weather Service, light rain showers are likely after 2 p.m., with gusts up to 17 mph. Rainfall totals will be less than a quarter inch, offering little relief to ongoing drought conditions. Drivers along US-70 should remain cautious as wet roads could develop during the afternoon commute.
Wednesday will bring mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid-60s, offering a brief respite from rain. However, Thanksgiving Day could see showers returning after 1 p.m., with a chance of thunderstorms. Southwest winds may reach 25 mph, and heavier rainfall is possible during the afternoon.
The cold front will push through by Thursday evening, leaving much cooler temperatures for the holiday weekend. Highs on Friday will only reach the mid-50s, with lows dipping into the low 30s by Friday night. Sunny skies will dominate Saturday, but highs will struggle to exceed 50 degrees, marking a brisk start to the weekend.
Residents should prepare for varying weather conditions and plan Thanksgiving travel accordingly. If you’re driving in rain-prone areas, keep headlights on and reduce speeds to avoid accidents.
