Wilmington, N.C. – Thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans Monday afternoon in coastal North Carolina as summer heat fuels a fresh wave of storms.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop after 3 p.m. Monday, bringing brief heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds. Rain chances increase to 40% by late afternoon, with storm potential continuing into Monday night. Areas along U.S. Route 17 and throughout New Hanover County should prepare for possible ponding on roads and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.
While Monday morning will start off partly sunny and quiet, rising humidity and temperatures near 90°F will create a steamy setup for afternoon storm development. Winds from the southwest at 7 to 9 mph could intensify during storms, especially into the evening hours.
Localized flooding remains a concern through Tuesday as saturated grounds from the weekend increase runoff risk. Drivers should allow extra time and avoid flooded roadways. Beachgoers are also urged to monitor local advisories due to lightning risks during storms.
No severe weather is expected at this time, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions change. Spotter activation is not currently planned, but residents should stay weather-aware throughout the day.
