Greenville, N.C. – Drivers and evening commuters in eastern North Carolina should prepare for thunderstorms moving in after sunset Thursday, with areas like Greenville, New Bern, and Washington likely to see downpours and occasional lightning.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a few stray showers could develop across the region this afternoon, but the more significant storm activity is expected after dark. Rainfall totals will generally stay under a quarter inch, except in areas impacted by thunderstorms.

Greenville will reach a high of 82°F today under partly sunny skies, with a 50% chance of showers and storms developing overnight. Lows will dip to around 65°F. The main concerns include isolated lightning strikes, brief heavy rainfall, and minor travel disruptions during the evening hours.

Residents should secure outdoor items, keep phones charged, and stay indoors during thunder and lightning. While no widespread severe weather is expected, localized gusts and brief downpours could impact travel on US 264 and NC 11.

Storm activity is expected to taper off early Friday morning, but additional showers may return over the weekend. Stay tuned for updates if storm intensity increases or if any warnings are issued.
