Raleigh, North Carolina – Slow-moving thunderstorms could trigger isolated flooding across the southern Piedmont today, with widespread showers expected across central North Carolina starting Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a cold front pushing into the region late Friday will drive a round of storms through early Saturday. Areas south and west of Raleigh could see localized downpours today, while a broader swath from Fayetteville to Greensboro is likely to get soaked overnight Friday into Saturday morning.
The threat includes travel disruptions, especially along I-40 and U.S. 1, where pooling water may cause hazardous driving. Communities in Wake, Harnett, and Lee counties are urged to remain alert for possible flood advisories. Residents are encouraged to avoid low-lying roads and secure outdoor items ahead of the storm.
Rainfall could bring brief relief to areas facing moderate to severe drought, particularly in the Coastal Plain, where wildfire risk has increased. However, streamflow levels remain historically low in parts of eastern NC.
The storm system will clear out by Sunday, bringing cooler, dry air under high pressure. Sunshine returns Sunday and Monday before temperatures rebound midweek ahead of the next system due Wednesday.
