Morehead City, North Carolina – Rip currents and scattered storms will disrupt Sunday plans along the Crystal Coast as North Carolina’s spring weather ALERT brings safety concerns and travel headaches to Carteret County beaches. Swimmers, boaters, and families in Morehead City and on NC-12 should expect hazardous surf and changing weather all day Sunday, with risks lasting through the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 8 a.m. through Sunday evening. Dangerous rip currents will impact Hatteras Island, Bogue Banks, and Shackleford Banks beaches—strong enough to sweep even experienced swimmers out to sea. The highest risk window for these currents hits a couple of hours around low tide, near 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Local officials urge everyone to stay alert, avoid swimming near piers, and heed warning flags posted along NC-12 and area beaches. If caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to shore until free.

Showers and thunderstorms may develop Sunday afternoon, with gusty winds up to 16 mph and brief downpours possible through evening hours. The good news: after the storms, the area will see sunnier, calmer weather for most of the week. Monday through Thursday looks mostly clear and warm, with daytime highs rising from the mid-70s to low 80s. Nights will feel mild, dipping into the upper 40s and low 60s.
