Morehead City, NC – Strong winds and colder-than-usual temperatures are sweeping across Eastern North Carolina (ENC) today as a departing cold front moves through the region. Blustery west to northwesterly winds will create hazardous marine conditions, while daytime highs remain below seasonal averages.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City, gusty winds will continue throughout Thursday, March 6, with peak wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph along the coast. These conditions pose risks for boaters and mariners, with rough waters and dangerous surf expected through tonight.

Daytime high temperatures will hover in the low-to-mid 50s across the region, several degrees below normal for early March. Clear skies will persist, but the cold front’s influence will keep conditions brisk until Friday, when a slight warm-up is anticipated ahead of another cold front set to arrive over the weekend.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and exercise caution, particularly near coastal areas. Mariners should heed NWS warnings and avoid unnecessary travel on the water. A return to milder temperatures is expected Friday before another round of cooler weather arrives Saturday.
