Morehead City, N.C. – A quiet and sunny Sunday morning across eastern North Carolina could take a sharp turn by late afternoon, as strong to severe thunderstorms are expected between 5 and 10 p.m. Damaging winds and hail are the main threats, especially in inland areas west of U.S. 17.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms is in place for much of eastern North Carolina today. Rain and thunderstorms will begin moving in from the west this evening, with the most active window for strong cells expected between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.

While the coast is starting the day with blue skies and a low rip current risk — ideal for beachgoers — residents further inland, including Greenville, New Bern, and Goldsboro, should prepare for possible gusty storms. Strong wind gusts and small hail may accompany the more intense cells.

Drivers should be alert for sudden downpours and possible minor flooding in poor drainage areas. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay indoors during thunderstorms.

Storm chances taper off late tonight, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
