Raleigh, N.C. – North Carolinians should brace for sweltering heat and the threat of afternoon thunderstorms as unseasonably warm temperatures push into the upper 80s Friday, with some areas nearing 90 degrees by early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the state will remain under the influence of warm, unstable air through Friday, bringing a heightened risk of scattered storms between 3 and 8 p.m. The strongest chances for rain and lightning center around the Triangle, Sandhills, and eastern Piedmont regions.

Cities like Raleigh, Fayetteville, Greensboro, and Wilson could see storm cells pop up during the late afternoon commute. While severe weather is not widespread, localized downpours, gusty winds, and lightning are possible. Temperatures across central and eastern North Carolina are forecast to hit 86–89°F, with heat indices climbing further in areas with higher humidity.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor work during peak heat, secure loose outdoor items, and have alerts enabled in case of fast-developing thunderstorms. Drivers should allow extra time during evening travel due to reduced visibility or wet roads.

The storm threat will taper off after sunset, but forecasters warn that additional rounds of unsettled weather could return over the weekend.
