Morehead City, North Carolina – A stretch of dangerous surf and soaking storms threatens North Carolina’s coastal towns Sunday into Monday, bringing safety risks for beachgoers and travelers.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Moderate Rip Current Risk remains in effect through Saturday evening south of Cape Hatteras. Beginning Sunday afternoon, heavy showers and thunderstorms could drench parts of eastern North Carolina, with localized flooding possible along roads like U.S. Route 70.

Sunday’s high will hit around 84°F, but it’s the gusty winds and up to 2 inches of rainfall that may disrupt plans. Storms may become strong by late afternoon, especially in Morehead City, Beaufort, and Hatteras Island. Winds from the south could gust as high as 23 mph.

Monday brings more of the same: scattered thunderstorms likely through the day and into the evening. Rainfall totals between half an inch to an inch and a half are expected across the region. Motorists are urged to avoid water-covered roads, and beach visitors should heed rip current warnings.

While Tuesday offers a brief lull with only scattered storms, the region stays unsettled all week with daily storm chances.
