Raleigh, NC – Increased fire danger is in effect across central North Carolina through 8 p.m. Wednesday due to dry conditions and gusty winds. The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a Special Weather Statement warning residents in the western and central Piedmont, as well as portions of the Sandhills, to take extra precautions.

According to the National Weather Service, very dry fine fuels combined with low afternoon relative humidity will create conditions conducive to rapid fire spread. Winds are expected to increase throughout the afternoon, with occasional gusts reaching 15 to 20 mph.

Authorities urge residents to avoid outdoor burning during this period. If burning is necessary, extreme caution should be used, and proper fire suppression equipment should be readily available. Officials also advise ensuring that smoking materials are fully extinguished and properly discarded to prevent accidental ignitions.

The affected areas include Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham, Raleigh, and surrounding communities. Fire departments and emergency management agencies are on alert as the heightened fire risk continues through the evening.

Residents should stay informed of changing conditions and follow local advisories. For the latest updates, visit the National Weather Service website or follow local emergency services for guidance.
