Asheville, NC – Strong winds are sweeping through western North Carolina, prompting a High Wind Warning and Wind Advisory in multiple counties until 7 PM EST Thursday. Residents should prepare for hazardous conditions, including downed trees, power outages, and difficult travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, areas above 3,500 feet—including parts of Buncombe, Haywood, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Jackson, Transylvania, and Yancey Counties—will experience northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Below 3,500 feet, wind speeds will range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.

The warning extends to Avery, Burke Mountains, and Caldwell Mountains Counties, where winds up to 60 mph are expected. The extreme conditions pose risks of falling trees, power line damage, and travel hazards, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Authorities advise residents to stay indoors, avoid wooded areas, and secure outdoor objects. If outside, be cautious of falling debris. Drivers should exercise extreme caution, particularly on mountain roads.
