Morehead City, N.C. – Heavy rain and a few thunderstorms are expected to drench eastern North Carolina late Saturday night into Sunday afternoon, bringing the threat of flooding from the Crystal Coast to the Outer Banks. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch through Sunday afternoon, warning that rainfall totals could reach six inches in some coastal areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the heaviest rainfall is likely along the Outer Banks, including Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, but showers and storms could extend inland toward Highway 17. The combination of downpours and high tide cycles may lead to localized flooding in low-lying coastal communities.
Drivers along U.S. 70, N.C. 12, and Highway 17 may face water-covered roads, while ferry routes serving Ocracoke and Hatteras could see delays due to rough waters. Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel, keep storm drains clear, and be prepared for sudden road closures.
The heaviest rain is expected overnight, with showers tapering Sunday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if rainfall bands linger longer than anticipated.
