Wilmington, N.C. – Heavy rain and rising water levels could bring dangerous travel conditions to parts of coastal North Carolina through early Wednesday. A Flood Watch is in effect for New Hanover and Brunswick counties from 2 p.m. Tuesday until 8 a.m. Wednesday, with rainfall totals possibly exceeding 5 inches overnight, especially near the Cape Fear River.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a slow-moving frontal system will fuel periods of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. The risk is highest along US-421, NC-133, and other flood-prone roadways from Wilmington to Oak Island. Low-lying neighborhoods and poor-drainage areas may see flash flooding after dark, when visibility is reduced.

Tuesday night could see rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, with isolated thunderstorm bursts increasing runoff risk. Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through water-covered roads and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

Looking ahead, Wednesday brings scattered storms and highs near 83°F, followed by a humid, unsettled stretch:

  • Thursday: 85°F, chance of thunderstorms
  • Friday: Scattered showers, high near 83°F
  • Saturday: Mostly clear, near 84°F
  • Sunday: Sunny and warm, near 87°F

More flooding alerts may follow if rain persists or storm totals rise faster than expected. Stay tuned to weather.gov/wilmington and local emergency officials for updates.
