Raleigh, N.C. – Heavy rain and strong storms are sweeping across central North Carolina today as the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal move through the region, bringing a heightened risk of flash flooding and isolated tornadoes into Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, widespread showers and thunderstorms will persist through the evening, with the most intense rainfall expected across the Piedmont and areas along or west of US-1. These regions are at particular risk for flash flooding due to repeated downpours. A tornado threat remains in place for eastern portions of central North Carolina, including counties like Johnston, Nash, and Wilson.

Travel may be hazardous on roads with poor drainage, and emergency managers are urging residents to avoid driving through flooded areas. Localized power outages are also possible due to high winds and saturated soil weakening trees. Temperatures across the region will remain in the 80s throughout the day.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts.

More showers and thunderstorms could linger into early Monday. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
