Morehead City, N.C. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across eastern North Carolina late Monday, bringing damaging wind gusts and a risk of severe weather from the Outer Banks to inland cities like Greenville and New Bern.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, two rounds of storms are expected — one beginning late this afternoon and another developing after midnight. The main hazard will be strong, potentially damaging wind gusts across all of eastern North Carolina, including Jacksonville, Williamston, and Cape Hatteras.

Much of the region falls under a Marginal to Slight Risk for severe weather, meaning scattered storms could produce localized wind damage, especially during the second round overnight. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages. Travel may be hazardous in low-lying or tree-lined areas, especially after dark.

Along the coast, rip currents remain a serious risk from Kitty Hawk to Topsail Beach, with High danger zones identified near Cape Lookout and the Crystal Coast. Beachgoers should avoid entering the surf.

Storm chances may ease Tuesday, but alerts could be extended. Stay tuned to local officials and the NWS for real-time updates.
