Wilmington, NC – Temperatures are set to drop near 20 degrees Thursday night, creating dangerous black ice conditions on roads and walkways. Commuters and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution, as refreezing of standing water will make travel hazardous through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, a clear and sunny weekend will follow the frigid overnight lows. Friday’s forecast brings highs around 43 degrees with sunny skies, while Saturday and Sunday will offer slightly warmer temperatures, peaking at 50 degrees by Sunday afternoon. Nights will remain chilly, with lows near 20 degrees Friday and Saturday before moderating Sunday night to around 32 degrees.

Motorists should remain vigilant, especially on major roadways such as Interstate 40 and U.S. 17, where icy patches may linger into the morning commute. The NWS advises avoiding sudden stops and steering carefully to prevent skidding.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to climb further next week, reaching highs near 60 degrees by Tuesday and Wednesday. Clear skies and mild conditions will provide a welcome respite after this week’s colder-than-average temperatures.

Residents should use extra caution during the overnight hours and monitor updates for any changes to road or weather conditions. Warmer days are on the horizon, but preparation is key to staying safe during the lingering cold spell.
