Morehead City, N.C. – Heavy rain is drenching eastern North Carolina this morning, with up to 7 inches reported near Jacksonville and Camp Lejeune, creating localized flooding and hazardous road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a swath of heavy showers and sub-severe thunderstorms is slowly pushing eastward. The heaviest rain is impacting areas from Kinston and New Bern to Morehead City and Bayboro, with continued movement expected over the next 1–3 hours.
Parts of Onslow County—including MCAS New River—have already received 5–7 inches of rain. Flash flooding is possible in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and limit travel this morning where possible.
Showers will taper later today, with calmer conditions expected by midday. Highs will reach the low 80s across the region. Still, forecasters warn the broader unsettled pattern may continue into midweek, keeping the chance for additional rain in play.
Stay tuned to local alerts as the storm exits the coast. Weather conditions should stabilize by early afternoon, but any new advisories will be issued if flooding worsens.
