Blacksburg, Virginia – Thunderstorms are set to return to Southwest Virginia starting early Thursday, with the heaviest impacts expected by the afternoon across the New River Valley and Blue Ridge areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a low pressure system tracking off the Carolina coast will bring early-morning showers to counties near the North Carolina border Thursday. Rain chances increase across the region by late afternoon, with thunderstorms likely west of the Blue Ridge, including cities like Roanoke, Galax, and Hillsville.

Thursday’s highs will range from 70°F to 80°F—slightly cooler than today’s above-normal temps in the mid-80s. Overnight lows will hover in the upper 50s to low 60s, with scattered rain and a few rumbles of thunder persisting through Friday morning.

Friday looks wetter region-wide, with showers and storms forecast to continue across southern and central Virginia. Commuters should plan for wet roads, potential ponding, and reduced visibility, especially during the Friday morning rush.

Residents are encouraged to limit non-essential travel during heavy rain and keep devices charged in case of power outages. More updates are expected as the system tracks inland.
