Suffolk, Va. – Drivers across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina should expect low visibility early Friday morning as patchy fog settles in through 8 a.m., potentially disrupting commutes and school bus schedules.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, fog is reducing visibility to around half a mile in locations including Suffolk, Emporia, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach, as well as parts of Hertford and Northampton counties in North Carolina. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after 8 a.m.
Motorists traveling along I-95, U.S. Route 58, and local roads such as Route 460 should use caution, especially near school zones and bus stops. Officials urge drivers to reduce speed, use low beam headlights, and remain alert for children waiting near roadways.
This type of fog is common in early June when humid air meets cooler surfaces after overnight calm winds. Though brief, these pockets of fog can form rapidly and affect rural and suburban areas alike.
The fog is expected to lift shortly after sunrise. No further advisories have been issued, but drivers should remain alert to changing conditions during the early commute.
