Blacksburg, VA — Residents across parts of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia are facing dangerously cold wind chills this morning, with advisories and warnings in effect until noon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), wind chill values as low as -15°F are reported in areas of northwest North Carolina, including Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. Meanwhile, Virginia communities such as Roanoke, Amherst, and Bedford are under similar advisories. In West Virginia, Greenbrier County faces the harshest conditions, with extreme cold warnings predicting wind chills as low as -23°F.

The advisories remain active until noon today, with some areas extending precautions through Thursday morning. NWS warns that prolonged exposure to these temperatures could lead to frostbite within 30 minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear hats, gloves, and face coverings, and minimize outdoor exposure. Pets should remain indoors, and portable heaters must be used safely to avoid fire hazards.

Drivers should prepare for icy roads, and communities are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors. Cold weather safety measures are critical to prevent injuries during this bitter cold spell.
