Morehead City, N.C. – Showers and thunderstorms are expected to return to eastern North Carolina tonight and Wednesday as moist, unstable air lingers across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a frontal boundary will increase storm chances starting Tuesday evening and continuing through midweek. Rainfall totals could reach 1/4 to 1/2 inch, with isolated higher amounts possible across coastal and inland counties from Wilmington to Greenville. The unsettled pattern may persist through Friday, with daily rain chances and scattered thunderstorms.
Localized flooding isn’t expected, but drivers should watch for ponding on roads in low-lying areas. Beachgoers near Oregon Inlet should also use caution: a moderate rip current risk is in effect south of the inlet today, especially along Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Pea Island. Swimmers should stay near lifeguards and avoid rough surf.
The National Weather Service recommends securing outdoor items and planning for brief delays due to storms. Thunderstorm activity could impact outdoor events and beach travel, particularly during evening hours.
Rain chances continue through the end of the week, and additional advisories may be issued as the front lingers over the state.
