Raleigh, N.C. – Storms could bring lightning, hail, and damaging wind gusts across central North Carolina beginning late Saturday afternoon and continuing into the early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Level 1 marginal risk for severe thunderstorms includes cities like Durham, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, and Goldsboro. The primary hazards include brief downpours, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and hail potentially reaching the size of quarters. Wind gusts could also create hazardous conditions, especially in open or elevated areas.
Storm timing is expected between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., with localized impacts near major roadways including I-40, US-1, and I-95. While the tornado risk remains very low, scattered power outages and isolated tree damage are possible due to wind.
Residents with outdoor plans today should monitor local alerts and identify a safe shelter location in advance. Keep phones charged and enable wireless emergency alerts to stay updated.
Although the threat is limited, conditions could quickly intensify—especially during peak commute hours. Additional advisories may be issued later this evening if storm activity increases.
