Newport, NC – Residents along the North Carolina coast should prepare for strong winds, heavy rain, and potential severe thunderstorms on Thursday as a powerful storm system moves through the region. Wind gusts of up to 55 mph and dangerous surf conditions are expected to impact communities from Ocracoke Inlet to Surf City.

According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, with a High Surf Advisory lasting until early Friday morning. Coastal areas, including Newport, Morehead City, and the Outer Banks, will see 7- to 10-foot waves, increasing the risk of beach erosion and hazardous swimming conditions. Inland areas can expect damaging wind gusts, power outages, and fallen tree limbs.
