Newport, North Carolina – After a stretch of warm, sunny spring weather, Newport and the surrounding Carteret County coastline could see storms roll in late this week, with rain chances climbing significantly by Thursday night and thunderstorms likely on Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, Tuesday and Wednesday will remain calm and dry, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 81°F and 82°F, respectively. Winds may gust as high as 15 mph Tuesday afternoon, but otherwise, conditions will be ideal for outdoor activities along Highway 70 and the Crystal Coast.

Changes arrive Thursday afternoon, when a 30% chance of showers emerges after 2 p.m. That risk increases to 40% overnight, and by Friday, storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. The chance of rain jumps to 60% Friday afternoon, with thunderstorms possible and locally heavy rainfall not out of the question. Drivers should expect slower conditions on roads including US-70 and bridges near Morehead City and Atlantic Beach.

The unsettled pattern continues into the weekend, with daily rain chances ranging from 40% to 50% through Sunday and possibly into Monday.
