Wilmington, NC – Melting snow and freezing overnight temperatures are creating hazardous travel conditions across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina. Black ice and fog are expected to linger until Friday morning, prompting a special weather statement from the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS, overcast skies and high temperatures in the 30s will limit melting today. Any thawed snow or ice is likely to refreeze overnight, with low temperatures dropping into the teens and lower 20s. Sunshine and temperatures in the 40s are expected Friday, bringing some relief to road conditions.

Drivers should proceed cautiously, especially on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled secondary roads, where ice may be harder to detect. Pedestrians are also urged to watch for slippery sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways.

If you must travel, reduce your speed and increase following distance. Avoid sudden braking or turning to reduce the risk of accidents.

Officials remind residents that slips and falls are a leading cause of injuries during winter weather. Stay alert and take precautions to remain safe.
