Raleigh, N.C. – Damaging winds and large hail could hit much of eastern North Carolina beginning as early as 2 p.m. Thursday, as two rounds of severe thunderstorms sweep through the region into early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the first round of storms is expected between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with scattered cells capable of producing severe wind gusts and hail. A second, more widespread round may develop from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., with a larger complex of storms and the potential for damaging winds. Confidence is moderate to high for the first round, but lower for the overnight system.

Cities including Raleigh, Greenville, New Bern, Jacksonville, and Wilmington are all at risk. Storms may impact evening commutes, knock out power, and down tree limbs. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during active weather.

This system may mark one of the stronger early summer events for the region, with hail threats extending to the Outer Banks and inland communities along I-95 and US-70 corridors.

Storm threats may linger into Friday and Saturday. Additional alerts could be issued as confidence in timing increases.
