Boone, NC – The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of the North Carolina High Country, including Avery, Yancey, and Mitchell Counties, in effect from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 a.m. Tuesday, December 9.

Forecasters expect total snow accumulations up to 3 inches, with lighter amounts near valleys and heavier snow above 3,500 feet. The advisory includes the communities of Banner Elk, Newland, Burnsville, and Bakersville.

According to the Weather Service, snow will begin early Monday morning and continue through Monday evening. Roadways may quickly become snow covered and slick, particularly in higher terrain, and scattered power outages are possible due to heavy, wet snow on trees and lines.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and allow extra time for travel during the morning and evening commutes. Conditions are expected to improve late Monday night as snowfall tapers off.

For the latest road conditions, residents can call 511 for their state’s travel updates.

This Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. Monday through 1 a.m. Tuesday.
