Morehead City, N.C. – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt Saturday plans south of U.S. 70, but the bigger concern across eastern North Carolina is a prolonged stretch of extreme heat building through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a mix of morning fog and clouds will give way to partial sun and a 20% chance of afternoon storms today. Highs will reach around 90°F, but oppressive humidity will push heat indices to 105–110 degrees by Sunday and continue through much of next week.

Cities from Morehead City to New Bern and inland toward Kinston and Goldsboro should prepare for rising temperatures Sunday and Monday, with highs climbing to 94–97°F. Beachgoers at Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach will also face hot conditions, with surfside highs near 84°F today and heat lingering into next week.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Emergency managers recommend using air conditioning where available and charging devices ahead of potential weather-related outages.

The heat wave is expected to persist well into next week. Additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
