Asheville, N.C. – Thick fog is making for a treacherous Tuesday morning commute across parts of western North Carolina, with visibility reduced to near zero in areas along I-40 and I-26 through 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for multiple counties including Buncombe, McDowell, Burke, and Catawba. The advisory stretches from Hendersonville to Hickory and includes travel corridors into and out of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Drivers on I-40, I-26, and US-74 are urged to reduce speed, use low beams, and allow extra time for travel. Visibility is especially poor in valleys and near river crossings, where fog tends to settle.

Forest City, Marion, and Morganton are among the towns seeing the thickest fog early this morning. School buses and morning commuters are being advised to exercise caution, particularly near mountain curves and rural intersections.

The advisory is expected to expire by 9 a.m., but lingering pockets of fog may persist in higher elevations. More travel updates could follow if conditions worsen.
