Roanoke Rapids, NC – A flood warning remains in effect for the Lower Roanoke River at Roanoke Rapids, where minor flooding is occurring and expected to continue.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh, the river reached 9.0 feet on Saturday afternoon and is forecast to rise to 9.6 feet by Sunday evening. Flooding will impact farmlands and timberlands along the river, with water potentially affecting properties in low-lying areas. At 10.0 feet, the public boat ramp on Rockfish Lane in Weldon is expected to be submerged.

Residents in Northampton and Halifax counties should remain alert and avoid driving through flooded roads. The NWS urges motorists to “Turn around, don’t drown,” as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
